MacArthur Project

Relative to human and animal requirements, crop proteins are highly imbalanced in amino acid (AA) composition. 25% of children in the world are stunted mainly because of protein deficiency caused by a monotonous diet of imbalanced protein. Protein utilization is proportional to the extent of AA imbalance. Any AAs present in excess are excreted, wasting valuable energy-expensive nitrogen and negatively impacting environment. Even in the developed world, AAs consumed in excess of the required balance are excreted thus, the problem is global. Initially targeting Asia and Africa, Geneshifters proposes to transfer newly developed AminoBalance technology to major crops using a novel fast breeding method to reduce stunting and other serious protein deficiency related problems. Three independent marketing channels will ensure that the project outcomes reach the most vulnerable people around the world. 100 PhD’s from regions most affected by protein deficiency will be trained specifically in dissemination of project outcomes.
